Tuition/Teaching Experience
I have been tutoring since 2008 when I started training to be a teacher. I always set high targets for my tutees and help them meet the expectations. I have tutored many p6 students too and generally they can improve from a fail to at least a B.
As for my own teaching years in school, I taught English and Math to secondary school students. Students are not afraid of asking me questions due to the close age gap and my friendly personality.
My current tutees are from secondary and JC level. Some of them used to fail math but after engaging me as their tutor for half a year, they have improved to B3. Those who were stronger are now scoring A1s. The bunch of JC tutees have been tutored by me since they were in secondary 2. They all got A1/2 for their O level E math
I am able to tutor on weekday nights in the central/south area from 7pm onwards and on weekends. On weekends, I can also tutor in CCK/yew tee on Saturdays. I am also open to group tuition at one of the tutee's place if needed.
I do long term tutoring and can see my tutees from secondary 1 all the way to secondary 4/5.
Rapport Building
I have absolutely no problems with building rapport with students as they don't feel scared of me as I am friendly. But I will not allow any rude behaviour and make sure that students keep on the task and learn effectively in a non-threatening environment.
Through my teaching years in school, most of the students who I have taught before love having me as their teacher and keep in close contact with me even after I have left teaching in school.
I communicate expectations with parents and mediate the difference in expectations of parents and ability of students. I like to keep parents in the loop about how their child is progressing and I will offer to give my phone number to the student for her to contact me when she has trouble with any school work too.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I am very acquainted with the syllabus as I have just left school earlier in January 2015. I also have friends who are still in the teaching line who will update me about any change in syllabus. I am well versed with a lot of teaching methods to help students understand how to solve math sums quickly.
As a Good Tutor
I will always make sure that I complete all that I planned to do within the tuition session, even if it means having to spend more time in each session, at absolutely no extra charges. I just take it upon myself that I need to finish all that I feel the students need to know before I leave that particular tuition session.
I am also punctual for all my tuition sessions and I always like to talk to parents about how they can help their child improve. This feedback may need some time to be given to parents as I need to take time to understand the child. But I will give whatever feedback possible to their parents and I appreciate parents who can share with me about what they understand about how their child learns so that we can help the child improve together.
