Rapport Building
I previously tutored one Sec 4 NA student for a duration of 1 year. My student lacks interest in studying and requires constant reminder to do his homework. I encouraged him to think about what he wants to do in the future and explains the need to do well academically so that he could have more choices after secondary school. To motivate him, I would buy chocolate or sweets when he show improvement in class test / tests that I personally adminster.
My student takes some time to learn simple concepts (i.e completing the square, sin rule and cos rule) and readily forgets them the next tuition lesson. I would thus give him similar questions every few weeks and see whether he could stilll solve the questions. Through several repetitions, he was able to internalize the concepts.
Based on my student's past tests and homework mistakes, i would identify topics which he is weak in and give him more homework on the particular topic. After he has learn a particular concept / mistake, i will give him practice questions on the spot to reinforce understanding and to gauge whether student truly understand the concept. I would also give him homework containing questions he made mistakes on the previous tuition session.
I also try to impart studying skills that I have acquired over many years of education. I highly encouraged my student to come up with mnemonics to memorize certain sub-topics that are likely to appear in exams. For example, in chemistry, I used mnemonics to teach my student how to memorize the reactivity series of metals and the blast furnace reactions. I also provide advice on exam smart techniques like skipping a 1 mark question in favour of doing other questions that have more marks.
I also try different approaches to teach a concept. For example, when my previous student had difficulties interpreting a question (eg. a probability qn that involves taking items out of a bag and then replacing/not replacing it) i would physically demonstrate it using stationeries from the pencil or give an analogy that he can relates to in real life.
