Rapport Building
As long as parents do not object, I give secondary school and JC students my handphone number and let them know that they can contact me anytime if they have any questions. During the first lesson, I will usually engage the student in an informal discussion about his goals in life, which schools he would like to go to and what he would like to do when he graduates.
After that, we look at his previous exam's results and talk about what are some of his strengths and weaknesses. Finally, we set intermediate and long-term goals, first for the upcoming exams, and then for PSLE or O Levels. As part of this process, we will also count how many weeks or months we have left to prepare for the next CA or SA, and the next national level exam.
I strongly believe that parents play a key role in the education of their children so the first lesson is usually also spent talking to them about what kind of improvements they would like to see. During subsequent lessons, I provide parents with regular updates about the progress of their child and explain what we have been doing during lessons.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
As a Good Tutor
I specialise in teaching English and History (current History undergraduate at NTU). I get A or A+ grades on all papers I write and I have written for The Guardian, Southeast Asia publications and alternative news media.
I provide students with my own English materials. They include basic to intermediate level grammar, vocabulary and phrasal verbs explanations and exercises. Materials are based on college level guide books on English grammar (British English) that I am familiar with.
I also use innovative ways to teach and help students revise, such as using flashcards, playing games, role-playing, immersion activities and purpose-driven writing. In addition to this, I help students set goals, plan for exams, strategise and employ simple tricks to maximise their score in exams (like time management, making smart guesses and checking answers).
