Tuition/Teaching Experience: I have given private tuition for 11 years, and I'm currently teaching in an IP School (this is my 5th year). I realise that many students who can't perform well are unable to link concepts between chapters, or have difficulty understanding the individual chapters. Hence, when it comes to the exam questions, they are unable to see how they can apply the techniques taught in the examples in their notes. By asking suitable questions, I'm able to find out the main problem that the students have and zoom into it.

My past students feedback that my explanation is very clear, and it makes much more sense to them after the explanation. They become much more confident in doing the questions. I do not believe in pure drilling, as I strongly believe that a certain level of understanding is required

Rapport Building: During the very first lesson with my student, I will always make sure that I speak to the student to understand more about their learning difficulties and also get to know them. I will also conduct a quiz on the first lesson to understand where the strength and weakness of the student for the subject.

As for the parents, I will spend time before or after the lesson to understand more about the parent's concern over their children's learning, as well as to introduce myself and my teaching style.

During the entire course of the year, I will constantly update the parents on the student's learning progress. I also keep a systematic record on a notebook each lesson, to update the parents on what has been covered during the 1.5 or 2 hour lesson, so as to enable both the parents and myself to track the student's progress.

I believe that communication is key when it comes to helping my student achieve an A, and also to allow the parents to learn about their children through the lessons.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I often check into MOE's website to keep myself updated on the curriculum, also through my helping my student with the notes and homework given, I would be constantly in touch with the MOE curriculum. I also have a few friends whom are MOE-trained school teachers that I catch up often with to learn about updates to the syllabus.

As a Good Tutor: The basic qualities are Compassion, Patience and Skillfulness. A good tutor, is one whom is skillful who can take a glimpse into the student's world, and be able to identify their struggles and to equip them with problem-solving skills.
I am a firm believer of teaching my students how to fish, instead of providing them the solutions or methods. I teach them how to self-study and how to look for answers and how to solve their problems instead of relying on my to complete their homework or to seek last minute help for exams.
