Tuition/Teaching Experience
I've been teaching in a local government school for more than 3 years. Before that I've been a private tutor for more than 5 years, right after GCE O levels.

I've been teaching Chinese Language and Mathematics (for tuition). The kids I've taught are mostly primary school students. Most of them have shown improvements and I've also taught 5 students in secondary school (e-math) of which all 5 have graduated and had obtained an A1-A2 for their GCE O levels.

Commitment / Other Details
I'm currently a full-time school teacher. However if I accept any assignment, I'll be responsible and committed to the student I'm teaching.
Rapport Building
I'm a strict teacher, but I firmly believe that care and concern for the child is important. Once a rapport is built, the child will be willing to work together with you.

Usually, I'll provide parents with feedbacks after 1-2 lessons. Parents' support are very important thus communicating regularly with them is very important.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I'm currently a school teacher, so I'm definitely updated with the new syllabus.
As a Good Tutor
Patience and willingness to guide and mentor the child

    Tuition/Teaching Experience
Currently an Undergrad at SMU, I have previously been in Singapore Polytechnic and prior to that, an IP school like River Valley High. Through all the different schools and the different work experience I have procured, I am able to interact with people from all walks of life. In my polytechnic days (prior to National Service) I used to give tuition part time and I really enjoyed it, watching my students improve and reach their potential.

I am able to start from August 2015 onwards. For weekdays, its preferable for the sessions to be at night to avoid clashing with my lessons. Alternatively, It can be on weekends as I do not have any commitments on weekends.
    Rapport Building
Every student is different in terms of their personality and behaviour, but through my many years of work experience, I will slowly assess the student and decide the best way to go about my lessons. Before proceeding with my method or style of teaching, I will seek the permission of the parents first. For example, for some students I will need to go at a slower pace and hence compromise quantity, however achieving quality. I prefer to ensure the student achieves proficiency in each of the topics than to go through all the topics quickly without an indepth explanation.
    Keeping Up with Curriculum
With my cousins still in primary school and secondary school, I often help them with their work and therefore keep myself updated with the curriculum. Moreover, I have many friends giving tuition and hence we will compare the different schools' papers and spot the trend.
    As a Good Tutor
I think a good tutor has to be patient and caring. If a student is good in that subject, he/she probably does not need tuition. If tuition is needed it means that they might not be that proficient in that subject. Or rather to be honest, he/she can just be not interested in that subject at all. So we have to be patient to ensure that the student understands what we are trying to teach, and to reach out to the students so that he/she can perform.

      Tuition/Teaching Experience
I had 2 years of tutoring experience. I have taught one P3, one P4, one P5, three S2 and two S4 students, excluding the non-official tuition assignments. Many of their parents are satisfied with the results after tutoring them and most of the secondary school students' parents requested for me to continue teaching but I had to stop because of National Service. Before I teach, I like to find out what interests the students. From that, I will try to build a link between their interest and the academic concepts that are being taught so that they find it easier to remember. I also like to include some life principles in my teaching so that they do not just benefit academically.

I am able to start immediately and I am able to commit until the end of 2015 for now because I am currently awaiting for the result of my application to be an untrained teacher in MOE, which will be out on Oct.
      Rapport Building
I usually build rapport with the parents by making them feel more involved in their children's academic, like something as small as praising their children and their progress in their studies.
      Keeping Up with Curriculum
I keep myself updated with the curriculum by doing the Ten Year Series. I will also read the textbook to learn about their new syllabus.
      As a Good Tutor
I think the basic qualities of good tutors are professionalism and care for students. Although it may just be a part-time job to some people, but it concerns the academic results and even the future of the students involved. Hence upholding the professionalism to give your best during the sessions is important, even though sometimes it is easy to just slack off especially when the tuition is happening in the comfort of the room, where the parents are not watching. When a tutor is able to care for his/her students, I believe it will create good rapport for the students to open up and also to learn. People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care. As a part-time tutor, it is also easier to care for and keep track of the student's progress and this is an advantage.

I'm a student who used to be easily distracted; even if I knew the importance of my grades, I could not stop myself from gaming near major exams. Hence I can empathize with those who may have the mental aptitude but lack the focus to achieve, and adapt my teaching methods to suit them.

I also have experience working with children in various settings-teaching about back problems in preschool, and the mentally challenged via TOUCH caring center. These experiences have tempered my patience (I used to have a really short fuse, haha) and opened my mind to the people who talents may not lie in the area of studies.

Lastly, I'm offering tuition services for multiple subjects, including English Language and Lingustics, so if you wish I could tutor multiple subjects to promote familiarity.

          Commitment / Other Details
I am able to commit to an assignment for up to 2 years, between 2015 and 2017. I am able to start at any point in time within this year.
          Rapport Building
I believe first and foremost that the student has to be able to accept my style of teaching- I have a younger brother who I tutored for A levels and it was difficult for him to accept my assertive style of teaching as he had a headstrong personality and often rejected explanations unless justified by a greater authority. Hence I changed my tactic-instead of offering him direct explanations I simply directed him towards the generally accepted answer with prompts and hints. Often, I realized, he already knew the answer to his question long before I even got close to giving out the obvious leads. To build rapport with my students is to adapt to each person's personality. Parents on the other hand I will try to provide insights into the student's capabilities in a politically correct manner-many parents feel that hard work will surely pay off for every student, yet there are limits to this assumption. Having too high expectations of their child often puts unnecessary pressure on the student to excel, which may negatively affect the final grade. To build rapport with them I would consult them on the student's behavior and personality-not only would that be a common topic, but would also provide insights from different perspectives on the student's studying habits.
          Keeping Up with Curriculum
Many of my subjects are in fact directly related to the modules I am currently taking-English Language and Linguistics is a subset of the Business Communication module I take in NUS Business School, while Economics is a lighter version of Managerial Economics taught in my modules. Additionally, I have the recent experience of coaching my brother for A levels this year (2015) and thus have updated myself with regard to the current A level syllabus.
          As a Good Tutor
A good tutor should have faith not only in his students, but in his own teaching. He should not be afraid to defer to a student's better judgement, but has to remain confident in his own curriculum.
